NAGARJUNASAGAR-DAM~ RESERVOIR~WATERFALL~ANCIENT BUDDHIST SITE


THE CITY OF NAGARJUNAKONDA WAS NAMED AFTER NAGARJUNA  THE DISCIPLE OF BUDDHA  IN the 2nd CENTURY.A TOOTH AND A GOLD EARRING BELIEVED TO BE OF THE BUDDHA IS  HOUSED  IN THE MUSEUM in the island AT THE MIDDLE OF THE RESERVOIR.IN ANCIENT DAYS THIS SACRED PLACE WAS CALLED Nagarjunakonda, OR SRIPARVATA THE CAPITAL CITY OF THE   Ikshvaku dynasty.THE ENTIRE SETTLEMENT WAS SUBMERGED INCLUDING 52 VILLAGES COMPRISING MAINLY OF NANDI VILLAGE AND KONDA VILLAGE. THE RELICS AND MONUMENTS OF THE ANCIENT CIVILIZATION WERE RELOCATED TO THE ISLAND HILL CALLED SRIPARVAT AND TO A SITE CALLED ANUPU. ANUPU ALSO BOASTS OF A SWAMI RANGANATHA  TEMPLE WITH THE DEITY VISHNU IN A RECLINING POSE CALLED ANANTASAYANAM  WHICH HAS BEEN MENTIONED IN THE PURANAS TOO DATING BACK TO MORE THAN 2000 YEARS OLD.

NAGARJUNASAGAR IS AROUND 150 KMS AWAY FROM HYDERABAD. WE REACHED THE TOWN IN AROUND 3 HOURS BY ROAD.  WE WERE ADVISED TO VISIT ETHIPOTHALA WATER FALLS  AROUND 11 KMS AWAY FROM THE DAM   WHICH IS A RARE WATERFALL AS  THE WATER IS THE  UNDERGROUND WATER OF THE NALLA MALLA HILL RANGE.BEAUTIFUL LIGHTING IS DONE AT AROUND 6 PM WHEN IT IS DARK. THEY LIGHT UP THE SURROUNDINGS AND WATER FALL WITH MORE THAN 40 FLASH LIGHTS  HOWEVER NOW ONLY 18 WORK AS THE REST GOT WASHED  AWAY BY THE RAINS AND FLOODS.ETTHIPOTHALA MEANS THE PLACE WHERE RISHIS DO MEDITATION AND IT HAS 2  CAVE TEMPLES DATING BACK TO FEW THOUSAND YEARS OLD WHERE RISHI DATTATREYA AND HIS CONSORT MADHUMATI DID PENANCE

INFORMATION ON BOAT TIMINGS TO NAGARJUNAKONDA

The ferry leaves from Nagarjuna Sagar Dam, taking about an hour and a half to reach the island. The ticket counter for the ferry shuts down at 2 pm.

Timing: 9:30 am, 11:30 am and 1:30 pm (Launch)
9:30 am – 2 pm (Museum Closed on Friday)
Admission Fees: INR 100 (Launch)
INR 7 (Museum)

THINGS TO DO.

VISIT THE WATERFALLS AROUND 4 30 PM -5 PM SO THAT YOU CAN PHOTOGRAPH IT WHILE STILL  THERE IS ENOUGH SUNLIGHT. YOU CAN TREK DOWN TO THE RANGANATHA SWAMI TEMPLE AND  RISHI  DATTTREYAS  CAVE TEMPLE WHICH IS JUST A STONES THROW AWAY FROM THE WATERFALL.BY THE TIME YOU RETURN AFTER THE DARSHAN IT WILL BE DARK AND YOU CAN ENJOY THE BEAUTIFUL LIGHTING. THE LIGHTING IS FROM 6 PM TILL 9 PM.

THE NEXT MORNING ONE CAN FERRY TO THE ISLAND MUSEUM AND ENJOY THE ISLAND MONUMENTS  FOR AROUND 45 MINS AND THEN RETURN BACK TO THE MAINLAND.

THE ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE OF ANUPU   4 KMS AWAY FROM THE DAM/BOAT LAUNCH HAS THE RELOCATED MONUMENTS- LIBRARY STUPA AND AMPHITHEATRE AND ALSO AN ANCIENT  VISHNU TEMPLE WHICH IS WORTH A VISIT.

THE HARITHA VIJAY HOTEL BY ANDHRA PRADESH STATE TOURISM IS A BEAUTIFULLY LOCATED HOTEL TO STAY AT  .MOST TRAVELLERS ADVISE TO EAT AT HOTEL SIDDHARTHA WHICH IS CLOSE BY AND ESCAPE THE FOOD AT THE HARITHA  VIJAY VIHAR RESTAURANT.
